I’ve heard about their health benefits as well as the fact that dogs love them. I was just a little scared to get something that might be sharp or that he could swallow. For my dog Bear, chewing is more than just a pastime, it’s his therapy. I adopted Bear a year ago from our local shelter. He had been kept at a foster home because he was extremely fearful and difficult to show. His foster mother loved him, but he was constantly fighting with her dog. Bear had been returned three times already. I was kind of his last hope.When I walked with my kids up to the local Petco, I only saw Bear. He was a large black lab mix with the most miserable expression I had ever seen on a dog. He looked terrified. I asked if we could take him out of the crate to meet him and a nice (strong) volunteer put a leash on him and led him over to the side of the building and away from the crowd. Bear was polite with me and my kids, but very aloof. I don’t think I knew what I was in for. I had rescued dogs before, but they were always big goofy, kissy dogs. I had never met a fearful dog. The rescue coordinator was very honest with us, told us he had been returned multiple times and that there was one claim of jumping on a child, but that she thought it might have been more of a training issue than anything. She told me that he had never been aggressive, but that he had fought with the foster dog. She said that he was very loyal and that it just took time for him to adapt to a new family. I filled out the paperwork and took him home.Bear was a nightmare at first. He pulled so hard on the leash, walks were a painful, terrifying experience. If he saw another dog, he would bark and lunge on the leash so hard. One time he even broke away and ran to my neighbor’s dogs. Thank goodness they were calm and held on leash, he just sniffed them. Another time a pit bull off leash ran at him and they tousled. I hired three trainers over the course of six months and was finally able to get a handle on him.One year later and Bear is the darling of the dog park. He still has his challenges, but runs up to everyone for rubs and compliments. He follows me around the house and is extremely loyal to me. He may never be an overly affectionate dog, but he loves belly rubs, walks and runs at the park. He is still anxious at times and for those times, a bone or chew toy can help to calm him. That’s where these antlers come in. I did a lot of research before I bought him an antler. I had heard horror stories of antlers splintering and piercing intestines. I read the reviews on a number of sites and even talked to Bear’s vet. He recommended a larger full piece of antler. I chose Doggie Dealz because I liked that I could choose the right size for my dog. I also read a number of reviews and heard so many people mention the excellent customer service that they received from the company as well.Bear’s antler arrived on Saturday. I handed it to him and he took to it right away. It is solid, with a spot of marrow on one end that entices him. He chewed it for over an hour. This morning (Sunday) he started right back up with it. I love the heft of the antler and the fact that it is so solid. Customer service has been excellent. I recieved on email before I received the antler providing some information on the company. I love the fact that they provide a portion of their profits to rescue organizations. It makes me feel good to know that my purchase goes to help other dogs like Bear. They love dogs as well and are wonderful advocates for providing them with natural chews like these antlers. I know I made an excellent choice in where to purchase Bear’s treat. I received another email last night, after the antler was delivered, with tips to ensure that he chews it. After I posted my concerns regarding the quality of the bones that I was receiving, and how the bones weren’t meeting my expectations in comparison to my 1st order with them, the company reached out to me to discuss my concerns and to learn more about the type of dog that I had. After a few emails back and forth, they shipped me out a replacement bone that my dog loves, and it has held up without any chipping or anything for the past 2 1/2 months. I feel much better leaving my dog alone with this bone, and knowing that it won’t chip or splinter. The first time that I ordered the bone, it was great quality, and I had no concerns about my dog chewing on it. I placed a second order a few weeks ago, and the quality was just not the same. My dog was able to start chewing the insides of the bone (not sure if the insides are safe or not), and the bone just started to splinter at the opening. I placed an order a few days ago for another bone since I thought maybe I just got a bad one, but the same thing is happening with this one as well. My dog is only 13 lbs., but I am concerned about the bone pieces breaking off and causing injuries to his intestines. I have seen some people post it’s because the bones aren’t elk antlers and instead are deer. It may be that the 1st order placed, I received an elk bone, and even though for the other orders, I asked for the same, I might have received more of a deer antler.
